ReceiptTrack
ReceiptTrack MTD: supported functions and income sources
ReceiptTrack’s current MTD product scope is cash-basis self-employment for individuals, plus supported mapped end-of-year income and personal information. UK property, foreign property, partnership profit, accrual accounting and agent filing are not supported. Live HMRC filing remains subject to production access and release. A clear, current view of the ReceiptTrack MTD for Income Tax scope, including supported income sources, important limits and routes for customers who need something else.
Making Tax Digital software should fit the whole of your tax situation, not only the part that is easiest to demonstrate. A sole trader may also have employment income, bank interest, dividends, a pension or partnership profit. Someone may start with self-employment and later become a landlord. Those differences matter because software can support one income source well while leaving another source outside its ordinary customer journey.
This page explains the current ReceiptTrack scope in plain English. It separates the main business source used for quarterly updates from the additional information used to complete the end-of-year position. It also states the important limits clearly, so a customer can decide whether ReceiptTrack fits before relying on it. Where a source is not supported, the right answer is to use another suitable route or choose software that covers the full set of needs.
ReceiptTrack is currently being taken through HMRC production-access approval for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax. The implemented functions described here do not mean that ReceiptTrack is already HMRC-recognised or available for live filing. Live HMRC submissions will remain unavailable until production access is granted and the service is released. This article is product-scope information, not tax advice.
Quick answer
ReceiptTrack’s current MTD product scope is cash-basis self-employment for individuals, plus supported mapped end-of-year income and personal information. UK property, foreign property, partnership profit, accrual accounting and agent filing are not supported. Live HMRC filing remains subject to production access and release.
The short version: ReceiptTrack is self-employment first
ReceiptTrack supports an individual sole trader using cash basis records for a self-employment business. The customer can find their HMRC business, keep and review income and expense records, work through cumulative quarterly updates, review annual information, complete supported end-of-year sections, request an HMRC calculation and make the Final Declaration when every required gate is satisfied.
The ordinary customer journey supports both standard tax-year quarters, running from 6 April to 5 April, and calendar update periods, running from 1 April to 31 March. ReceiptTrack does not offer accrual accounting as an alternative to cash basis. It is designed for individuals managing their own affairs; an agent filing journey is outside the present customer scope.
UK property and foreign property business submissions are not supported. A customer with either property source should not try to treat it as self-employment income in ReceiptTrack. HMRC says chosen software must support all relevant income sources, and customers can use more than one product only where the products work together and each separate submission is handled by one product.
| Income source or setup | ReceiptTrack status | What this means |
|---|---|---|
| Self-employment business income and expenses | ✅ Supported | The main ReceiptTrack MTD journey covers digital records, cumulative quarterly updates and the supported end-of-year flow for self-employment. |
| UK property business income and expenses | ❌ Not supported | Do not enter property activity as self-employment. Choose another compatible product or route that supports UK property. |
| Foreign property business income and expenses | ❌ Not supported | Foreign property submission is outside the current ReceiptTrack customer journey. |
| Cash basis | ✅ Supported | ReceiptTrack uses cash basis for its supported self-employment scope. |
| Traditional or accrual accounting | ❌ Not supported | ReceiptTrack does not provide an accrual-basis customer journey. |
| Individuals filing their own return | ✅ Supported | The product is designed for an individual customer using their own HMRC connection. |
| Tax agents filing for clients | ❌ Not supported | Agent authorisation and agent filing are outside the present customer journey. |
Additional income and information supported at end of year
Quarterly updates summarise the relevant self-employment business income and expenses. They are not a complete tax return. At the end of the year, other income and personal information may still need to be reported. ReceiptTrack has separate customer sections for Employment, Annual Summary, Losses and Individual Information, followed by one End of Year review. This keeps additional income away from self-employment turnover while still allowing supported information to reach the correct HMRC product family.
The Individual Information journey covers supported mapped fields across employment-related information, dividends, savings, pensions, state benefits, foreign income, other income, capital gains information, charges, reliefs, insurance-policy income and other deductions. CIS deductions and directorship dividends have dedicated ReceiptTrack workflows and reconciliation controls. Support is field-specific: seeing a broad heading does not mean every possible tax circumstance or every HMRC form beneath that heading is supported.
The customer should complete only the sections that match their real situation and resolve every visible warning before Final Declaration. If ReceiptTrack identifies a form that has no approved submission path, it blocks completion rather than silently dropping the answer. That distinction matters: a saved draft is not the same thing as a supported HMRC submission.
| Source or information | ReceiptTrack status | Scope note |
|---|---|---|
| Employment and employment expenses | ✅ Supported | HMRC-held employments can be reviewed and supported employment details are included in the End of Year workflow. |
| Construction Industry Scheme deductions | ✅ Supported | Reviewed CIS payments are reconciled through the dedicated customer and End of Year workflow. |
| UK dividends, including supported directorship dividends | ✅ Supported | Ordinary UK dividends and accepted director vouchers are combined without double counting. |
| Savings income | ✅ Supported | Supported UK savings account and annual interest information can be reviewed and submitted. |
| Pensions and state benefits | ✅ Supported | Supported mapped pension, pension-charge and state-benefit information is available in Individual Information. |
| Foreign income, other income, capital gains, charges, reliefs and deductions | ⚠️ Supported fields only | ReceiptTrack supports the mapped forms shown as available and blocks an unsupported form instead of pretending it was filed. |
| Partnership profit as an individual partner | ❌ Not supported | The customer must use another suitable filing route and acknowledge that diversion before ReceiptTrack can complete its supported journey. |
What the supported self-employment journey includes
For an in-scope self-employment customer, ReceiptTrack connects the year rather than presenting unrelated API buttons. The customer retrieves their HMRC business details, chooses the supported quarterly basis, prepares cumulative figures from reviewed records and sends each quarterly update through the ordinary signed-in workspace. The customer can also read back the cumulative position HMRC holds for the selected year.
The annual path includes supported self-employment allowances and adjustments, Employment, Individual Information, CIS, Directorship Dividends and the version of Individual Losses applicable to the selected supported tax year. End of Year is a readable review and submission step. ReceiptTrack also prepares the supported Periods of Account, retrieves the current Late Accounting Date Rule election as a protective check, and prevents calculation where an unsupported condition would make the result unsafe.
Final Declaration remains gated. ReceiptTrack requests and retrieves the HMRC calculation, displays the declaration, requires the customer to agree explicitly, and submits only after the supported sections and reconciliation checks are complete. A protective block is not a missing submission hidden from the customer; it is an instruction that the current situation needs to be corrected or completed through another route.
| Stage | Current function |
|---|---|
| Business setup | Retrieve HMRC business details, choose a supported update period and confirm cash basis. |
| Digital records | Capture, categorise, review and retain self-employment income and expense evidence. |
| Quarterly updates | Prepare and send cumulative self-employment summaries and read back the HMRC-held cumulative position. |
| End of Year | Review and submit supported annual, employment, individual-information, CIS, dividend, loss and adjustment data. |
| Calculation | Trigger and retrieve the applicable HMRC tax calculation after protective checks pass. |
| Final Declaration | Show the declaration, collect explicit agreement and submit the supported final or amendment journey. |
What to do when your income source is not supported
Do not relabel an unsupported source to make it fit. Property income is not self-employment income, and partnership profit should not be entered as ordinary business turnover. That would make the records less reliable and could send information through the wrong HMRC route. Instead, stop before submission and decide how the unsupported source will be handled.
HMRC provides a software finder that asks questions about your circumstances and gives a personalised list of compatible options. Use the finder if you have UK or foreign property, partnership income, accrual accounts, agent requirements or any other feature outside the ReceiptTrack scope. Ask the alternative provider directly whether it supports both the income source and the accounting period you need.
It can be possible to use more than one product, but the products must work together to meet the full MTD obligation. Keep a clear boundary between them: decide which product holds the records, which creates each quarterly submission, which reports other income and which completes the tax return. Never send the same separate submission through two products.
- Open the GOV.UK compatible-software finder and answer for every income source you have.
- Confirm support for your accounting period, tax year and customer type before paying or transferring records.
- Tell your accountant or adviser which parts ReceiptTrack will handle and which parts will use another route.
- Keep evidence of the figures passed between products so the final return can be reconciled.
How to read this scope responsibly
This page describes current implemented product scope and will be updated when ReceiptTrack adds, removes or materially changes a supported customer journey. HMRC APIs, tax rules and production-access conditions can also change. A green Supported label therefore means the function exists in the defined ReceiptTrack journey; it is not a promise that every unusual combination of facts is covered.
Before filing, use the validation and review messages shown for the selected tax year. If a section is marked unsupported, incomplete or blocked, do not assume it will be included later. Resolve it in ReceiptTrack where an action is offered, or use an adviser or another compatible software route where the function is outside scope.
ReceiptTrack will not enable live HMRC filing until production access is granted and the relevant release is ready. Until then, this page helps customers and reviewers understand the intended product boundary. It should not be used as confirmation that ReceiptTrack appears on HMRC’s recognised-software list.
Use the official software finder
HMRC’s software finder provides a personalised list based on income sources and required features. Use it whenever the table above shows a source or setup as not supported, or when your circumstances are more complex than this summary.
Keep the boundary visible
- Use ReceiptTrack only for the supported sources shown in the customer journey.
- Resolve every blocker before End of Year and Final Declaration.
- Do not assume a saved answer was sent unless the workflow confirms submission.
- Recheck software suitability whenever a new income source begins.
- Sole traders deciding whether the ReceiptTrack MTD scope matches their affairs.
- Customers with employment, savings, dividends, pensions or other income alongside self-employment.
- Anyone who needs to identify an unsupported source before choosing filing software.
Before you rely on the ReceiptTrack MTD journey
- Confirm that your main business source is self-employment, not property or partnership income.
- Confirm that cash basis is appropriate for the supported journey.
- List every additional source of income you need to report.
- Check that each relevant ReceiptTrack form is available and not marked unsupported.
- Use the GOV.UK software finder for any source or feature outside scope.
- Wait for ReceiptTrack live filing availability after HMRC production access and release.
Choose software for the tax situation you actually have
ReceiptTrack’s MTD scope is deliberately clear: self-employment for individuals using cash basis, with cumulative quarterly updates and a supported end-of-year and Final Declaration journey. It also covers a broad set of mapped additional-income information, including employment, CIS, dividends, savings and pensions. UK property, foreign property, partnership profit, accrual accounting and agent filing are outside the current scope.
If every relevant source you have is supported, follow the ReceiptTrack review messages and wait for live availability after production approval. If one source is not supported, use HMRC’s compatible-software finder and arrange an alternative route before you begin filing. The safest choice is the one that covers the whole situation without disguising gaps.
Review this page again if your income changes. Starting a property business, joining a partnership or moving to a different accounting basis can change the software you need even when last year’s setup worked well.

Key takeaways
- Self-employment on cash basis is the supported main business source.
- Additional income is supported only where the customer journey exposes a mapped, sendable form.
- Unsupported sources must use another suitable route; they must never be disguised as self-employment.
- The GOV.UK software finder helps customers compare compatible products for their complete needs.
- ReceiptTrack is not claiming live HMRC recognition before production access is granted.
